DENVER (KDVR) — Southwest Airlines announced recently that it would no longer serve four airports starting in August. This includes three airports that currently have direct flights to and from Denver International Airport.

Why Denver International Airport doesn’t call itself ‘DIA’

The following airports will no longer have any Southwest flights landing or departing starting in August:

  • Bellingham International Airport in Bellingham, Washington

  • George Bush International Airport in Houston, Texas

  • Cozumel International Airport in Cozumel, Mexico

  • Syracuse Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York

The only one of these that Denver did not fly to directly was Syracuse. The other three airports all had at least one nonstop flight to and from the airport per week.

Despite the change, passengers will still be able to fly directly to three of the four destinations, as other airlines have nonstop flights from Denver to Cozumel, Syracuse and Houston.

The only destination impacted will be Bellingham, as Southwest was the only airline that offered direct service from Denver.

Additionally, there will still be direct Southwest flights to and from Houston. However, they will all now be to the Texas city’s William P. Hobby Airport, which is one of Southwest’s main hubs alongside Denver.

According to the airline, the move was prompted by a $231 million net loss in the first quarter of 2024.
