Dow Jones Finishes Week Above 20,000

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20071.46 for a gain of 186.55 points or 0.94%. The S&P 500 closed at 2297.42 for a gain of 16.57 points or 0.73%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5666.77 for a gain of 30.57 points or 0.54%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.97.

For the week, the Dow Jones was down 0.13%, the S&P 500 gained 0.10% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.09%.


Friday's market movers

The market gained on Friday after the president signed two executive orders, one directing the Treasury secretary to plan for replacing Dodd-Frank, and a second order to delay the new fiduciary rule. Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its employment report for January which showed an increase of 227,000 jobs in January. The report beat the consensus estimate of 175,000.

  • The Services Purchasing Managers' Index increased to 55.6 from 53.9.

  • Factory orders increased 1.3% in December.

  • The Institute for Supply Management's Non-Manufacturing Index was slightly lower at 56.5.

  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count increased to 1,072.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Visa (NYSE:V) up 4.59%.

  • Goldman Sachs (GS) up 4.57%.

  • JPMorgan (JPM) up 3.06%.



In the broad market, financial stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.66%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1377.84 for a gain of 20.41 points or 1.50%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 841.34 for a gain of 13.12 points or 1.58%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8180.13 for a gain of 109.19 points or 1.35%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9773.83 for a gain of 132.30 points or 1.37%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1706.64 for a gain of 21.80 points or 1.29%; the S&P 100 Index at 1013.69 for a gain of 7.54 points or 0.75%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1367.29 for a gain of 11.11 points or 0.82%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1276.05 for a gain of 9.64 points or 0.76%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 644.95 for a gain of 4.20 points or 0.66%.
