Hospitality chain Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) is progressing on its path to sustainability by enhancing the adoption of renewable energy within its network of properties.
As part of its ESG+ framework, Paathya, the company has reached a milestone in the 2024-2025 financial year, with 51 of its hotels now drawing power from clean energy sources, including 13 operating entirely on renewable energy.
This has been achieved via on-site installations, off-site sourcing, and power purchase agreements.
IHCL HR executive vice-president Gaurav Pokhariyal said: “In line with our Paathya goals, our green energy transition is rooted in a holistic strategy that balances environmental impact with operational resilience.
“Our growing transition to renewable energy, alongside greater operational efficiency, is driving meaningful change across our hotels, reflective of our commitment to responsible hospitality and our long-term sustainability vision.”
The company now meets over 35% of its energy requirements through renewable sources, equating to an annual electricity consumption of around 410 million kilowatt-hours or 410 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
Hotels in Maharashtra are spearheading this initiative with extensive on-site solar installations, contributing over 66GWh of renewable energy usage annually.
Similarly, hotels in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states are significant contributors, each using around 30GWh via the consumption of wind energy.
IHCL has a global portfolio of 380 hotels, including 137 in the pipeline, spread across four continents, 14 countries, and more than 150 locations.
Earlier this year, IHCL Goa Resorts collaborated with Bisleri International to launch 'Bench of Dreams', a project focused on sustainability through the creation of benches made from recycled plastic bottle caps.
In January 2024, IHCL unveiled the completion of nine pilot projects that implemented climate-smart, sustainable cooling solutions across its properties in India.
The projects were completed in collaboration with IFC's TechEmerge Sustainable Cooling Innovation Programme.
"IHCL adopts renewables for 51 hotels as sustainability push gains pace" was originally created and published by Hotel Management Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
