Are Insiders Selling Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) Stock?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we’d be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we’ll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock on the market. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that ‘insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.’

Harris Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Christopher Young made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.0m worth of shares at a price of US$162 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$137. While their view may have changed since the sale, this is not a particularly positive fact. We generally tread carefully if insiders have been selling on market, even if they sold slightly above the current price. Christopher Young was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership of Harris

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it’s a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Harris insiders own 0.4% of the company, worth about US$64m. We’ve certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
