X no longer marks Twitter’s spot.
San Francisco on Monday yanked the newly installed flashing “X” logo off the social media company’s headquarters after receiving a slew of complaints about issues ranging from structural safety to illumination.
The installation a few days ago was unpermitted, the city said, which made the sign illegal. The two dozen public complaints filed over the weekend didn’t help.
Billionaire owner Elon Musk, who acquired the company last year, replaced its iconic blue bird logo with a black X in a rebranding he announced just a week ago, vowing to “bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”
The 52-year-old CEO also had the Twitter sign removed, though the work was halted before the “e” and “r” could be taken off the building, because the company also did not obtain permits for the removal. The workers had not taped off the sidewalk below, which could have endangered pedestrians if something fell.
That left the “er” standing as the only indication of what the company once was.
Then on Friday a massive “X” logo appeared Friday atop the downtown San Francisco building where the bird had been. The city last week started investigating that too, since the work was also unpermitted and thus posed safety concerns. Concerns about “consistency with the historic nature of the building” also played a role, San Fransisco Department of Building Inspection spokesperson Patrick Hannan said.
On Monday, the X was gone.
Neither Musk nor a company rep commented on Monday.
