We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Sensient Technologies Corporation (NYSE:SXT).
What Is Insider Buying?
It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sensient Technologies
Director Deborah McKeithan-Gebhardt made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$128k worth of shares at a price of US$64.02 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of US$65.97. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. The good news for Sensient Technologies share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.
Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$193k for 3000 shares. But insiders sold 357 shares worth US$26k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Sensient Technologies insiders. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insider Ownership of Sensient Technologies
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Sensient Technologies insiders own about US$29m worth of shares. That equates to 1.0% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
