Strata Gallery moves downtown

Jul. 31—Strata Gallery will start year three in a new location.

Strata opens Aug. 4 downtown at 125 Lincoln Ave., Suite 105.

The nonprofit, artist-member gallery resided at the Design Center on Cerrillos Road since David Olivant founded Strata in 2021.

"This is a more centrally located space," said Olivant, Strata's founding president. "We had a two-year lease. At the end of the lease period, we decided to do some looking around. We are growing and getting a good following."

Strata does three-week regular art show, typically showcasing college faculty artists, and two-week shows for emerging artists.

"We are not driven by a commercial agenda," Olivant said. "We don't have to sell."

Each year, Strata selects five emerging artists from about 100 applicants and each one gets a two-week solo show at Strata. Strata's 19 member artists select the emerging artists and also vote in new members.

Originally from England, Olivant was an art professor at California State University Stanislaus for 25 years before retiring to Santa Fe in 2020.
