US Market Indexes Gain for the Week

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday with gains for the week. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20821.76 for a gain of 11.44 points or 0.05%. The S&P 500 closed at 2367.34 for a gain of 3.53 points or 0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5845.31 for a gain of 9.80 points or 0.17%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.47 for a loss of -0.24 points or -2.05%.


For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.95%. The S&P 500 gained 0.69% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.11%.

Friday's Market Movers

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • New home sales increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 555,000.

  • The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 96.3.

  • The North American Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,095.

In the broad market, the utilities sector led gains.
