Ameresco's Irish subsidiary, Cork Sustainable Energy Limited (CSEL), has received approval from An Bord Pleanála for a significant upgrade to the Kilvinane Wind Farm in Ireland.
This development represents a crucial enhancement of the country's renewable energy infrastructure and aligns with global efforts to transition towards sustainable energy sources.
Located 8km east of Dunmanway, County Cork, Kilvinane Wind Farm currently consists of three turbines.
The upgrade is set to boost the farm's capacity, enabling it to generate approximately 8,500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy annually.
This contribution is significant as Ireland is already the world's second-largest producer of wind energy in terms of the share of electricity generated from wind power.
An Bord Pleanála's approval was granted based on the upgrade's design, which maintains the character of the existing structure and its harmony with neighbouring structures.
This decision offers wind farm operators and planning authorities clearer guidance on the planning aspects of routine maintenance and upgrades.
Ameresco senior vice-president UK and Ireland Mark Apsey said: “The upgrade will ensure the efficient operation of the wind farm and contribute to Ireland's ambitious renewable energy targets, providing cleaner energy to thousands of homes and businesses.
“This decision provides clarity and certainty for wind farm operators in Ireland, and we are excited to move forward with our turbine upgrades.”
In related news, Ameresco SUNEL Energy, a joint venture between Ameresco and SUNEL Group, recently secured contracts worth €303.4m ($345.7m) for the construction of three solar parks in south-western Romania.
These projects, with a combined capacity of 466MWp (megawatt peak), are being developed by OMV Petrom and CE Oltenia, and are part of Romania's strategy to improve energy security and meet climate goals by transitioning away from coal power by 2032.
