Here's Why We Think Copart (NASDAQ:CPRT) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

In This Article:

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Copart (NASDAQ:CPRT), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Copart's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Copart managed to grow EPS by 9.4% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. On the revenue front, Copart has done well over the past year, growing revenue by 11% to US$4.5b but EBIT margin figures were less stellar, seeing a decline over the last 12 months. So it seems the future may hold further growth, especially if EBIT margins can remain steady.

Are Copart Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$59b company like Copart. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$4.9b. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.
