It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Story-I Limited (ASX:SRY), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Story-I

ThiamSeng Lee made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$500k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.025 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.019). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders bought 24.0m shares for a total of AU$600k. In the last twelve months Story-I insiders were buying shares, but not selling. Insider Ownership of Story-I

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Story-I insiders own 66% of the company, worth about AU$3.3m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
