Miami litigator Michael Barket was elected to a position vacated by Miami-Dade County Court Judge Don Cohn and took office in January.

He was assigned to the criminal division, but his 19-year private practice focused on civil matters — family law, probate, guardianships, landlord-tenant disputes and traffic court. His father and brother also were attorneys.

Barket was a member of the Florida Bar's real property and probate trust law section and the family law section. He served as a Miami-Dade teen court judge and on Miami's police chief search committee, the Bayfront Park Management Trust, equal opportunity advisory board and community relations board.
