Institutions' substantial holdings in Principal Financial Group implies that they have significant influence over the company's share price

A look at the shareholders of Principal Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:PFG) can tell us which group is most powerful. We can see that institutions own the lion's share in the company with 73% ownership. In other words, the group stands to gain the most (or lose the most) from their investment into the company.
No shareholder likes losing money on their investments, especially institutional investors who saw their holdings drop 3.4% in value last week. However, the 9.8% one-year returns may have helped alleviate their overall losses. They should, however, be mindful of further losses in the future.
