U.S. Senator John McCain was found to have a brain tumor, according to a Wednesday statement released by his office.

The tumor was discovered after the former Republican presidential nominee underwent a procedure last week to remove a blood clot.

Of note, the senator's doctors said in the statement that McCain's "underlying health is excellent."

McCain issued a statement on Twitter:

President Donald Trump released a message soon after the news of the senator's condition broke. "Senator John McCain has always been a fighter," he said. "Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon."

The senator's daughter, Meghan McCain, also issued a statement on Twitter about the diagnosis:
