TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese trading houses from Mitsubishi to Sumitomo Corp promised healthy shareholder returns this year amid cautious profit forecasts, trying to keep investors, including Warren Buffett, happy amid U.S. tariff uncertainty. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is a large minority shareholder in Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo, Itochu and Marubeni. Mitsubishi expects net profit for the year ending next March to fall 26% due to the absence of one-off gains from asset sales it enjoyed last fiscal year.

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese trading houses Mitsui & Co, Sumitomo Corp and Sojitz on Thursday issued cautious profit forecasts for the current fiscal year as U.S. tariffs threaten global supply chains and increase economic uncertainty. Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is in the United States this week trying to negotiate a tariff deal with President Donald Trump's administration. The Bank of Japan on Thursday sharply cut its economic growth forecast for the year ending March 2026 to 0.5% from 1.1% and kept interest rates unchanged, as tariffs weigh on exports.

Sumitomo resumes production at Madagascar's nickel project

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp said on Thursday it was slowly resuming production at the Ambatovy nickel and cobalt project in Madagascar after last month's pipeline issue and is reviewing future output volumes. Sumitomo has been struggling to stabilise production and improve profitability at the Ambatovy project, which launched in 2005. "Our priority for the Ambatovy is to normalize production by addressing operational issues," Chief Executive Shingo Ueno told a news conference.
