MILAN (Reuters) -UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel said on Wednesday he currently saw little scope to advance his acquisition strategy, given that Commerzbank had become too pricey and Italy was effectively blocking a takeover of Banco BPM. Veteran investment banker Orcel arrived at UniCredit in 2021 vowing to use M&A to speed up growth, provided deals meet strict criteria that would allow him to retain the returns his shareholders have enjoyed thanks to high interest rates and tight cost control. Having driven a seven-fold increase in UniCredit's share price, Orcel last year moved on Commerzbank and smaller domestic peer Banco BPM, sparking angry reactions in both Berlin and Rome.

BRUSSELS/MILAN (Reuters) -Italian bank UniCredit is expected to win European Union antitrust approval for its Banco BPM takeover bid after offering to divest 206 branches to ease competition concerns, people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday. The European Commission, which acts as the competition enforcer for the 27-country EU, is keen on banking consolidation to create strong lenders in the bloc, one of the people said. The majority of branches to be divested are in northern and north-eastern Italy and will be Banco BPM's, the sources said.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -EU antitrust regulators have extended their decision deadline on Italian bank UniCredit's takeover bid for its smaller rival Banco BPM after a national watchdog asked to take over the review, a European Commission filing showed. ROME (Reuters) -Germany does not expect Italy's UniCredit to launch a full bid for German rival Commerzbank at present, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday.
